The VW Golf nameplate has been a staple in Mzansi since 1979, earning its place as one of the most beloved hatchbacks on local roads. The last standard Golf model we saw was the 7.5, which held its own in sales. However, the overwhelming popularity of the GTI variant during that time led Volkswagen to drop the standard model entirely for the Golf 8 generation — a decision that left many fans scratching their heads.
Now, with the arrival of the Golf 8.5, VW South Africa seems to be correcting course. We spent time behind the wheel of the refreshed Golf 8.5 1.4 TSI Life Plus to see whether it still delivers on the Golf legacy — and, in short, it does.
Finished in striking Granadilla Black with optional 17-inch Nottingham wheels, the 8.5’s exterior remains clean and contemporary. A small tint would complete the look, but even as-is, it turns heads.

Inside, the upgrades are more tangible — the return of physical buttons on the steering wheel is a welcome change, and the dashboard now reflects the more modern Tiguan aesthetic. You get a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster, an intuitive infotainment screen, suede/cloth seats, and a panoramic sunroof that lifts the cabin’s feel.
Under the hood, the 1.4-litre turbocharged engine punches above its weight with 110 kW and 250 Nm, delivering power through an 8-speed Tiptronic gearbox to the front wheels. It feels lively — more like a 2.0-litre engine in day-to-day driving — and impresses with its refined performance and fuel efficiency, averaging a respectable 6.3 L/100 km during our test.
The Golf 8.5 is a genuinely comfortable and tech-savvy place to be, with soft-touch materials, ample space, and a driving position that caters to both daily commutes and weekend getaways.

Verdict
The Golf 8.5 1.4 TSI Life Plus is a confident return to form for VW’s standard Golf lineup in South Africa. It’s stylish, well-equipped, and a pleasure to drive. However, pricing is a potential sticking point — starting at R604,000 before options (and climbing close to R700,000 with our tester), it sits in a space now crowded with crossovers and entry-premium rivals. Still, for those who appreciate the blend of practicality, quality, and heritage that only a Golf can offer, the 8.5 makes a strong case for itself.
