Cape Town’s overcast skies set the scene for the local introduction of the new MG3, a compact hatchback available to the Mzansi market with both petrol and hybrid powertrains.
From the outside, the MG3 follows a contemporary design approach with LED headlights, 16-inch wheels and a profile that leans toward the sportier side of the segment.

Inside, the layout features dual screens, MG Pilot driver assistance with ADAS, and finishes that aim for a modern look. The interior feels competitive for this class, although some materials remind you that this is still a budget-friendly hatch.
The engine options include a 1.5-litre petrol unit producing 81kW and 142Nm with either a manual or CVT transmission. There is also a hybrid version, which combines petrol and electric power for a total output of 155kW and 425Nm, paired with a 3-speed automatic transmission. MG claims a 0–100 km/h time of 8 seconds for the hybrid.
During the launch drive in the MG3 1.5 HEV, the car showed mixed results. On the first leg of the trip, the transmission tended to hold gears longer than expected. On the return leg, performance was smoother and fuel consumption averaged 4.5 L/100 km with three passengers and a loaded boot.

Cabin space is adequate for a vehicle in this class and accommodates four adults without issue. The boot handled three small travel bags and two backpacks. Practicality could be improved with rear cup holders and wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, features that some rivals already offer.
Pricing
- MG3 1.5 MT Comfort – R269,900
- MG3 1.5 CVT Comfort – R309,900
- MG3 1.5 CVT Luxury – R344,900
- MG3 1.5 HEV – R469,900
At this stage, the MG3 appears to be positioned as an alternative in the small-hatch segment, offering a mix of features and pricing that may appeal to buyers looking for something different. A full assessment will require extended testing, which we plan to do soon.
