Toyota’s iconic hybrid is now in its 4th generation. For 2021, the Japanese automaker has added new technology, safety systems and functionality to its popular hybrid car.

    Safety

Notable upgrades and enhancements to the updated Prius include Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) which brings with it an array of safety aids in the form of a Pre-Crash System (PCS), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Automatic High Beam (AHB), Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) plus Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) and Lane Trace Assist (LTA). Other safety features like ABS, EBD, Brake Assist and VSC functions are included too.

    Interior

Inside, the infotainment system now features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto whilst the touchscreen benefits from a higher-resolution display. The updated Prius is fitted with the brand’s Toyota Connect as standard which offers in-car Wi-Fi connectivity with a complimentary 15Gb of data and telematics interface with the MyToyota app.

    Comprehensive standard features

The Prius offers buyers a comprehensive spec level with standout features including; Heads-Up Display (HUD), reverse camera, high-definition multi-information Display, seat heaters with electric lumbar support and wireless (cellphone) charging. Dual-zone climate control, rain-sensing wipers and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror ramp up the convenience quotient.

Smart Entry and auto-retractable exterior mirrors are joined by LED head-, fog- and DRL-lamps on the outside.

    Improved colour palate

The Toyota Prius has a total of 8 exterior colours on offer, while Pearl White has been replaced by the new Platinum White Pearl.

    Powertrain

The full Hybrid’s (FHEV) proven 1.8-litre Hybrid powertrain remains unchanged. It combines an electric motor with Toyota’s 4-cylinder Atkinson cycle 2ZR-FXE engine for a total system output of 90 kW. A dedicated EV-mode enables the vehicle to operate under full-electric power. Power is sent to the front wheels via an integrated CVT transmission.

    Pricing

The Prius 1.8 is priced from R566,400. This includes a 6 Services/90,000km service plan, an 8 Year/195,000km hybrid battery warranty and a 3 Year/100,000km warranty.
