Things haven’t been all rosy for the French manufacturer but the company is not giving up on the South African market. This is good news for the consumer as they will still have more choices to consider when parting with their hard-earned cash for a new set of wheels. In fact, Peugeot aims to attack the A-segment, which has a lot of players but is still growing, with its new 108.

Beautiful landscape in park with tree and green grass field at morning.

    Exterior

In terms of size, the 108 is 3.47m long and 1.62m wide. There are virtually no overhangs making the vehicle easy to drive in the city as it will slot into the smallest of parking spaces. In the looks department, the front features stylish headlights with LED daytime running lights. The rear light cluster features Peugeot’s three claw design.

    Inside

A large touch screen dominates the dash and connects in two ways: by Bluetooth and by Mirror Screen for its applications that are compatible with use in a vehicle. This Mirror Screen function operates using MirrorLink technology for telephones running on Android, RIM and Windows, and by AppInCar for telephones running on iOs.

The speedometer housing is in keeping with the steering column, which is height-adjustable and is covered by a cowl to ensure clarity in all conditions. It comprises an analogue speedometer and an LCD screen arranged concentrically. On the right side, an extension houses the Gear Shift Indicator.

    Practicality

The boot stands at 227 litres including the spare wheel. This extends to 868 litres by folding the 50/50 rear seat backrests. Peugeot says the 108 offers provides several storage areas. The glove box has a lid and will take a 1 litre bottle and the door pockets a 500ml bottle.

    Safety

The new Peugeot 108 offers a number of active and passive safety features. These include: six airbags, IsoFix mountings, Hill Start Assist, ABS, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Emergency Collision Braking System and switchable ESP.

    Engine

The Peugeot 108 is offered with a 1.0 VTi 3-cylinder engine that makes 53 kW and 93 Nm, and that is paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox.

    Pricing

    108 ACTIVE 1.0 THP MT R179,900.

    This includes a 5 year / 100,000km comprehensive service plan and a 5 year / 100,000km comprehensive warranty.
