    Driven: all-new Hyundai Staria MultiCab

The Hyundai H1 has been a fan favourite locally and sadly the last generation was the swan song to be released. Fast forward to 2022, the former has been replaced by the new Staria. The Staria line-up features the Luxury, Elite, MultiCab and Executive, with 5 to 11-seat configurations. We spent some time with the MultiCab although under not-so-great circumstances due to a family bereavement but perfect for the occasion.

    How do you identify it?

The futuristic-looking people’s mover. which retains the looks of the range but stands out with a pair of split doors. It also features rear elongated vertical tail lamps and lowered rear bumper.

    Interior

Inside, there’s an 8-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and wireless screen mirroring capabilities. There’s also a wireless charging pad and the five passengers have the benefit of a cargo area that has a volume capacity of 2,890-litres. It was quite comfortable for all five occupants during this time and the cargo section proved to be a benefit for our entire luggage. Space is galore across the entire MPV with them featured on the door bins above the driver and front passenger.

    Performance

The Staria Multicab is powered by a 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine making 130kW and 430Nm. It is paired with a smooth 8-speed automatic gearbox which sends power to the front wheels. The 2.2L engine is responsive and pleasantly smooth at most altitudes. There was minimal body roll at most twisties but of course, we pushed the MPV to its capabilities. Hyundai claims an average of 8.7L/100km and our stint with the Staria MultiCab saw us manage a commendable 6.9L/100km.

    Final Word

Overall, it offers buyers that seek to work during the week and adventure on the weekend. It may possibly be the best middle ground between the rest of the range or the upcoming Panel van which should be available at the end of 2022. The design language of the Hyundai Staria Multicab was the talk of the town across the 1 500km we travelled in the MPV. We do also believe that the looks do deserve an electric drive train soon.

It is priced from R759,900, which includes a seven-year/200 000km warranty, six-year/90 000km service plan and roadside assistance for seven years or 150 000km.
