Meet the potent Hyundai Kona N. The letter N to Hyundai is like M to BMW, meaning not only do you get visual cosmetic changes, but also performance enhancements.

    Unhinged looks

Finished in a rather striking Performance Blue paint finish, our steed rocked 19-inch forged wheels, a double-wing roof spoiler, and two exhaust pipes to let other motorists know you mean business. It’s quite a head turner and onlookers can’t believe that such an epic looking SUV has a Hyundai badge on it.

    Simple yet good interior

Stepping inside the blue beast, you get an exclusive N colour package featuring a one-tone black interior with Performance Blue accents, beautiful body-hugging bucket seats with “N” insignia on them, and a multifunctional steering with customizable “N” buttons. Additionally, the Kona N also comes with a digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch touchscreen that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The highlight for me has to be beautiful thick rimmed multifunctional steering wheel with customizable “N” buttons. To add some ambiance to the cabin, the Kona N comes standard with a sunroof. Overall, it’s a pretty simple affair with above average quality but a tad behind the Germans.

    Powering the beast

Powering the Kona N is the Hyundai’s turbocharged 2.0-litre T-GDI engine that produces power 206 kW and 392 Nm. This power is put down to the front wheels via a snappy 8-speed N DCT. To keep things in check, the Kona N gets an electronic limited slip diff and specially developed 235/40R19 Pirelli P-Zero high-performance tyres. Hyundai claims a 0 – 100 km/h sprint in 5.5 seconds and it certainly feels that quick.

The Kona N has to be one of the most fun cars we’ve piloted. When driving spiritedly its quite a rewarding experience. With that being said, one wouldn’t daily such even though it means to be “practical” that title is taken away due the stiff suspension. Depending on the road surface, it tends to get a bit unbearable.

    Conclusion

The Kona N is probably the most fun you’ll ever have in a small SUV, and is somewhat practical with its ride quality being a key factor for some when it comes to their buying decision. The Kona N offers what’s been missing in the segment, which is excitement and the Kona N certainly brings that aspect in droves. The Hyundai Kona N is priced at R764,900 and comes with a seven-year/200,000 km warranty and a five-year/75,000 km service plan.
