Driven: We spend time with Land Rover’s new Range Rover Sport PHEV

In the ever-evolving landscape of luxury SUVs, the 2023 Range Rover Sport PHEV emerges as a beacon of innovation, seamlessly blending opulence with environmental consciousness. This plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) not only captivates with its iconic design but also pioneers a new era of responsible driving.

    Exquisite, high-tech cabin

The PHEV variant introduces an eco-friendly dimension to the Range Rover Sport lineup, allowing for short electric-only trips and reducing overall fuel consumption. Beneath its sleek hood lies a potent combination of a turbocharged engine and an electric motor, delivering a robust and refined driving experience.

True to Range Rover’s heritage, the Range Rover Sport PHEV spoils its occupants with a lavish interior. Premium materials, exquisite craftsmanship, and cutting-edge technology converge to create a haven of comfort.

The PIVI Pro Duo infotainment system takes center stage, offering a dual touchscreen setup that controls everything from climate settings to navigation. Smartphone integration, voice commands, and advanced safety features further elevate the driving experience. Despite the smooth exterior and the expensive art-peace it resembles, the Range Rover Sport PHEV stays true to its off-road legacy, featuring Terrain Response 2 technology. Whether navigating city streets or conquering rugged terrains, this SUV adapts seamlessly to the environment.

Living with a luxurious plug-in hybrid

In our time with the PHEV, we felt that the Electric-Only Range was a little limited but still a welcome add-on.

While the PHEV capability is commendable, the electric-only range might fall short for some users, especially on longer journeys, but impresses in and around school runs, especially when you have a charger close by as this model doesn’t charge the batteries using the engine.

Unsurprisingly, luxury comes at a cost. The Range Rover Sport PHEV’s premium price might be a deterrent for budget-conscious buyers, but we doubt this level of car has buyers second guessing their bank account.

Accommodating the hybrid components impacts the cargo space ever so slightly, limiting the SUV’s utility for those who prioritize hauling capacity. When not worrying about cargo space, the driver enjoys a very smooth drive and ride quality. The transition between electric and petrol power is seamless, offering a smooth and responsive acceleration that enhances the overall driving experience. The air suspension system contributes to a comfortable ride, absorbing bumps, and undulation effortlessly. The cabin remains serene even on less-than-ideal road surfaces.

The Range Rover Sport PHEV surprises with its nimble handling, defying its sizable stature. Precise steering and well-tuned suspension make it a joy to navigate through various driving conditions. Tailor your driving experience with selectable modes, including electric-only for city commutes, hybrid for a balanced approach, and a dynamic mode for spirited driving.

    Verdict

In summary, the 2023 Range Rover Sport PHEV emerges as a beacon of luxury and sustainability in the competitive SUV market. While its premium pricing of R2,694,400 (before options) and limited electric range may pose considerations, the overall package of performance, opulence, and environmental conscientiousness makes it a compelling choice for those seeking the pinnacle of automotive refinement.
