    Driven: We drive Subaru’s new Crosstrek

    Having been thoroughly impressed with the previous-gen Subaru XV, now re-branded as the Crosstrek, our curiosity is piqued as we delve into the latest model to uncover its current offering and enhancements.

    What’s new?

    Exterior updates and changes are more evolutionary than revolutionary, featuring a more prominent grille, sharper lines, and sleeker headlights. The real transformation occurs inside, where the new design borrowed from the Outback and WRX imparts a refined and upmarket look. This overhaul provides access to a plethora of features, including wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a wireless charger, Remote Keyless Access, and the acclaimed EyeSight Driver Assist Technology.

    Driving impressions

    Our driving experience revealed a potential area for improvement – the engine, specifically the low-end torque. In comparison to its competition, the Crosstrek’s naturally aspirated engine could use a boost in responsiveness. While turbocharged engines offer more torque, the naturally aspirated counterpart is acknowledged for its reliability. Prospective buyers must weigh the trade-off between a more responsive engine and potentially higher fuel consumption against the durability offered by the current configuration which is also linked to a CVT. This is one of the better CVT’s we have sampled, but it is not known for being as responsive as a torque converter or DCT.

    Another small niggle was the wireless charger. It is not in a ‘secured’ platform nor is it adequately “rubberized” for grip. You would always find that the cellphone would slide around at every small turn.

    This model has also seen an almost R80k increase from the previous model and may raise eyebrows among potential buyers. That said, the Crosstrek still manages to deliver tremendous value, with a starting price of R579,000. To also be fair, most if not every new release will see a hike in price – but we feel the updates warrant the jump – and so are the gained improvements.

    Final thoughts

    Our final words are that the Subaru Crosstrek maintains its allure, building upon the foundation set by its predecessor. With a host of new features, a refined interior, and a standout design, it continues to be a compelling option in its segment. The slight price increase may be a consideration, but for those seeking a well-rounded, stylish, and technologically advanced crossover, the Crosstrek remains a solid choice that will fit different lifestyles.
