Mazda Southern Africa discontinues its local BT-50 bakkie offering

Mazda Southern African recently announced the end of production and importation of the Mazda BT-50 Double Cab Pick-up for the South African market.

Ever since its introduction in 2008, taking over from Mazda’s popular B-series of LCVs, the BT-50 has shown varying sales performance for Mazda in the South African market. Initially, the BT-50 was produced through a partnership with Ford Motor Company of SA at its Silverton facility.

The latest iteration, released in 2021 and produced in Thailand through a partnership with Isuzu, has struggled to gain traction in the fiercely competitive double-cab market, particularly when compared to locally manufactured brands.

“The South African LCV, and in particular the double cab market, is extremely well developed and competitive with locally manufactured Brands and nameplates dominating sales. This factor, as well as an extremely challenging landscape for imported vehicles, competing directly with locally manufactured products has led Mazda SA to make this difficult decision.” Commented Craig Roberts MD of Mazda SA.

The remaining BT-50 vehicles available at dealerships will be the last ones for sale in South Africa, as Mazda SA Pty Ltd will not be importing any more BT-50 vehicles to the country. Mazda SA and its 42 dealerships nationwide will provide ongoing support for all existing BT-50 vehicles, including those under warranty, in service plans, and currently on the roads in South Africa. Mazda Corporation will still produce the BT-50 for other international markets through its partnership with Isuzu.
