Unveiled in 2017 and launched locally back in 2019, the BMW X2 used the hashtag #TotallyUngovernable – so were peoples emotions regarding some elements on the first generation model. The first X2 received BMW badges on the c-pillar, which found to be sacrilege as enthusiasts found that those were reserved for legendary status car such as the 3.0 CSL. Anyway, fast-forward to 2024 and the new second generation has hit the SA market.
Design
It’s quite a departure from the outgoing model in terms of design following the coupe shape of BMW coupe SUVs like the X4 and X6. It’s also longer, taller and wider than the previous-generation model. At launch, BMW will be offering the sDrive18i and the M35ixDrive.
Kicking off in the M35i xDrive, highlights on the exterior include Illuminated grille, M specific front splitter, quad exhaust, M mirrors and standard 21-inch wheels with the option of the M Sport Pro Package. The entry to the X2 range, the sDrive18i, comes standard with M-Sport package and 19-inch wheel. You also get bigger 20 and 21-inch wheel options.
One way we can describe the design is the same as the previous generation model, it’s quite polarizing. We love the fact that it looks like a baby X6, especially the range-topping M35i xDrive model.
Interior
The BMW X2’s interior mirrors the X1’s, boasting a modern premium feel with sporty accents. It features a sleek instrument panel with the BMW Curved Display, a floating armrest with controls, and convenient amenities such as a smartphone tray, and wireless charging. In sporty fashion, the M35i gets M sports seats, M shift paddles, M leather steering, alcantara dash. It’s overall a good place to be in, however, rear vision is hampered by the rear widow which is quite small.
Powertrains
In terms of powertrains, the sDrive18i is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder good for 115 kW/ 230Nm which is paired to a 7-speed automatic. The three-cylinder engine pulls along quite briskly, and the 7-speed automatic ensures seamless shifts as you cruise on the highway or decide to get a bit racy.
The more potent M35ixDrive packs a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine makes a potent 233 kW/400 Nm. The engine in this is strong and sounds quite good on the move. Though rocking 21-inch wheels, the ride is quite compliant.
Conclusion
The new BMW X2 sees itself compete with the likes of the Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA. It ticks many boxes, but we await to get in on test for a full comprehensive review.
