In a bold move to reduce fuel stops, the latest iteration of the Hilux is here to save the day. While the exterior styling of the Legend and Legend RS models remains the same, the Raider model sports some eye-catching cosmetic tweaks, including leather seats as standard.

During the launch, we had the pleasure of experiencing the newly refreshed Toyota Hilux GD-6 4X4 Raider 6AT MHEV, driving from King Shaka Airport to the Midlands.

    Design tweaks

The Raider’s fresh look is enhanced by new LED headlights, a redesigned front bumper, a sleek grille with honeycomb mesh, and stylish black mirrors and door handles. The current-gen Hilux may be getting a bit long in the tooth, but we’re sure Toyota is cooking up a new model.

In terms of other tweaks, the 2.4 model gains retractable mirrors, while the 2.8 boasts leather seats and 8-way power seat adjustment on the driver’s side. The Raider 48V adds jam protection, auto up/down windows on all windows, push start, smart entry, and Multi-Terrain Select.

    Powertrain

When it comes to the powertrain, the robust 2.8-liter diesel engine in the Hilux GD-6 4X4 Raider 6AT MHEV now features a 48V hybrid system. This system includes a belt-driven motor generator that charges a compact 48V lithium battery, neatly nestled under the rear seats and weighing a mere 7.6 kg. The combined system output is an impressive 150 kW and 500 Nm, boosting fuel efficiency by up to 10%.

    Driving impressions

The new 48V system significantly improves throttle response, adding a touch of urgency to the vehicle’s performance. As for the fuel consumption benefits, a more thorough review is needed to gauge the full impact.

Toyota has also rolled out a new accessory program aimed at buyers looking to personalize their Hilux to match their lifestyle. This program extends beyond the Hilux to include other models in the Toyota lineup.

All in all, the 2024 Toyota Hilux GD-6 4X4 Raider 6AT MHEV offers a compelling mix of stylish updates, practical enhancements, and improved efficiency. It’s a top contender for those seeking a reliable and versatile bakkie with a touch of modern flair.
