Driven: We drive Land Rover’s big daddy Range Rover Autobiography P530

The Range Rover Autobiography has long been the epitome of opulence and luxury. The all-new fifth generation doesn’t seem to have dropped the ball in this regard.

    What’s new

We recently spent some time with Range Rover Autobiography P530, you would be forgiven if you did not immediately notice the difference between outgoing model and new one. However, the updates do stand out, they are subtle but still maintain the sophisticated looks. The exterior updates are minimal and are generally unnoticeable by the untrained eye. That said, updates include a smaller grille, a clamshell bonnet and gloss black taillights.

    Plush cabin

Open the soft-close doors, and you’ll be greeted by a plush cabin with leather and wood appointments. It also features a 13.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, along with a Rear Seat Entertainment (RSE) system, offering adjustable 11.4-inch HD touchscreens and an 8.0-inch Rear Seat Touchscreen Controller mounted in the centre armrest of the Executive Class Rear Seats, which operates temperature controls and blinds, among other features.

The Range Rover’s cabin is charming, with a dash that is uncluttered and made of soft-touch materials. It oozes opulence and provides a calming effect as soon as you step inside. Rear space is generous, and the seats can recline. It’s best enjoyed from the back seat.

    Power and drive

The Range Rover Autobiography P530 is powered by a 4.4-litre V8 engine that produces 390 kW of power and 750 Nm of torque, allowing it to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in a claimed 4.6 seconds with Dynamic Launch engaged, reaching a top speed of 250 km/h.

If you happen to jump into the front seat, you’ll find the same 4.4-litre V8 engine at your disposal, effortlessly surging the 3-tonne vehicle forward. It glides across all terrains, as expected, thanks to the adaptive air suspension. That smooth ride is felt throughout, and the large SUV remains composed in most corners. The fuel consumption during our time was a high 17.2 l/100 km, but most buyers aren’t purchasing the Range Rover Autobiography P530 for its fuel efficiency.

    Final word

What can be said that hasn’t already been said about the Range Rover Autobiography P530? The latest iteration of this luxury SUV sets standards that even the much-loved Germans might struggle to beat. While it’s more expensive than the BMW X7 or Mercedes-Benz GLS, those often feel as if they lack a unique personality. The Range Rover Autobiography exudes character and is worth the starting price of R4,212,700 for the P530. If you’re looking to spoil yourself after working hard, this is it—with a V8 engine to match.
