Driven: We get behind the wheel of new Lexus NX 450h+

We recently jetted down to Cape Town to sample the Lexus NX 450h+, which is available exclusively in the F Sport trim. And no, we didn’t bring any Gatsby or biltong for the ride, but this hybrid SUV packs a punch!

    Design

The plug-in hybrid makes a bold statement with its aggressive design, featuring a signature black spindle grille, sleek LED headlights, and LED taillights that stretch across the rear like a Joburg taxi queue in rush hour. It rides on sporty 20-inch wheels, giving it an assertive road presence—perfect for commanding attention at the robots.

    Interior

Step inside, and you won’t be disappointed. The F Sport steering wheel complements the premium feel of the interior, equipped with F Sport leather seats so comfy, you might forget you’re stuck in Cape Town’s infamous traffic. The 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system is intuitive, offering wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, and a 10-speaker Premium Audio sound system that’ll have you feeling like you’re at a live concert, even if you’re just dodging potholes. And despite being a hybrid, boot space remains practical with 520 liters—plenty of room for the cooler box and camping gear!

    Powertrain and Driving Experience

Under the hood, the NX 450h+ combines a 2.5-litre 4-cylinder engine with an 18.1 kWh battery, producing 227 kW and 227 Nm of torque (Lexus gives us the torque figure for the engine only). Power is delivered to all four wheels via a CVT transmission. Lexus claims an impressive fuel consumption of just 1.3 l/100 km, and the electric range provides around 60 km on a full charge—enough for a quick dash to the shops without needing to fill up.

On the road, the NX 450h+ is a pleasure to drive. The transition between electric and internal combustion engine (ICE) power is so smooth you’ll hardly notice. However, when the petrol engine kicks in—especially when you floor it—the CVT’s droning noise becomes noticeable, like that friend who always repeats the same joke. But overall, it’s a refined and enjoyable driving experience, whether you’re cruising on the N1 or tackling those winding Cape mountain passes.

    Verdict

The Lexus NX 450h+ delivers on style, comfort, and hybrid efficiency. While the CVT may take some getting used to, its smooth hybrid performance, luxurious interior, and striking exterior make it a compelling option in the luxury hybrid SUV segment. At R1,336,200, it’s a premium option for eco-conscious drivers who still want to look good pulling up at the braai.
