Volvo’s all-electric flagship SUV, the EX90, is set to launch in South Africa in the first half of 2025. The EX90 is part of the brand’s expanding range of battery-electric vehicles.
Focus on safety
The EX90 introduces Volvo’s latest safety system, described as an “invisible safety shield.” This system uses advanced sensors, including cameras, radars, and LiDAR, combined with Volvo’s software and NVIDIA DRIVE technology, to enhance safety for occupants and road users.

Performance and range
Built on the SPA2 platform, the EX90 features a Twin Motor Performance setup, delivering 380 kW of power and 910 N.m of torque. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. The EX90 has an estimated range of 751 km in urban conditions and 604 km on the combined cycle. Its 111 kWh battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes using a 250 kW DC fast charger.
South African context
According to Felipe Yagi, Head of Marketing & Communications at Volvo Car South Africa, the EX90 has already gained international recognition. He noted that the SUV’s features, including its safety systems and spacious interior, are expected to appeal to South African buyers.

Volvo’s electrification goals
The EX90 is part of Volvo’s broader electrification strategy. The company offers a range of electrified vehicles, including battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), and mild hybrids. Volvo aims for electrified vehicles to account for 90-100% of its global sales by 2030.
Local launch details
Pricing and specifications for the EX90 in South Africa will be announced closer to its launch. More information is expected as the 2025 release date approaches.
