Omoda C9 2.0TGDI 400T Explore AWD: A stylish December cruiser

After spending over 2,500 km behind the wheel of the Omoda C9 2.0TGDI 400T Explore AWD during the December period, it’s safe to say this SUV turned heads while delivering a comfortable long-distance driving experience. However, a few tech quirks and fuel consumption figures added some considerations to the mix.

    Design & features

The Omoda C9 rolls on standard 20-inch wheels wrapped in Michelin rubber, giving it a solid stance on the road. Its sleek lines are sharper than your aunt’s side-eye, and the full LED lighting ensures visibility from Joburg to Durban. Inside, the cabin is a well-appointed space with dual 12.3-inch screens, leather seats that feel comfier than a Sunday nap after eating “iHardbody,” a Sony sound system that keeps the yanos pumping, and a panoramic sunroof perfect for those golden hour views.

    Performance & drive

Under the bonnet, the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine produces 192 kW and 400 Nm of torque, sending power to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The ride is further enhanced by Continuous Damping Control (CDC) adaptive suspension, which ensures smooth handling over various terrains. While overtaking on the highway feels effortless, there is a slight turbo lag when pulling away from a standstill.

From Joburg to Durban, the C9 proved to be a solid road trip companion, sipping fuel at just 7.6L/100 km on the open road. However, in mixed driving conditions, including city traffic, fuel consumption climbed to 9.5L/100 km by the end of the trip.

    Tech & usability

The Omoda C9’s tech suite brings a modern touch, but some usability issues surfaced during extended use. Apple CarPlay occasionally failed to connect, requiring multiple attempts to re-establish the connection. Additionally, the air conditioning menu kept popping up when trying to access other functions on the infotainment screen, which became frustrating over time.

The adaptive cruise control and safety systems were another mixed bag. While useful for long drives, they sometimes required manual intervention, making the system feel less intuitive than expected.

    Verdict

The Omoda C9 2.0TGDI 400T Explore AWD delivers a stylish, comfortable, and well-equipped driving experience, making it a compelling choice for long-distance cruising. Its sleek design, premium interior, and adaptive suspension stand out, though minor tech frustrations and slightly high fuel consumption in city driving may be worth noting for potential buyers. Pricing for the Omoda C9 2.0TGDI 400T Explore AWD starts at R885,900.
