GAC Emkoo Executive-Plus 1.5L TGDI: A bold new contender with room for improvement

We recently got behind the wheel of the new GAC Emkoo Executive-Plus 1.5L TGDI. The new kid on the block comes standard with titanium-tungsten accents, sleek Matrix LED headlights, flush door handles, and a striking Mecha-style rear. Its futuristic design will undoubtedly turn heads, but does it have the substance to back up its style?

    Interior and features

Step inside, and the Emkoo presents a simple yet refined cabin. Standard features include leather seats, a digital instrument cluster, a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a floating center console, a wireless charger, and a panoramic sunroof. Boot space is a generous 638 liters, making it practical for road trips and daily errands alike.

However, while the cabin looks premium at first glance, closer inspection reveals some areas where quality could be improved. Visible welds when opening the door detract from the overall build quality, and some button placements may feel unintuitive.

    Technology and connectivity issues

The Emkoo comes equipped with Apple CarPlay, but during our time with the vehicle, it frequently disconnected or refused to connect altogether. While the infotainment system itself is relatively user-friendly, these connectivity issues can be frustrating, especially for those who rely on seamless smartphone integration.

    Performance and driving experience

Powering the Emkoo is a 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine that delivers 130 kW and 270 Nm, paired with a 7-speed DCT. GAC claims the Emkoo will average 6.4L/100km in fuel consumption, but in real-world driving, we saw figures closer to 8.5L/100km. This discrepancy is worth noting for potential buyers looking for an efficient crossover.

On the road, the Emkoo delivers a mixed driving experience. It performs well at highway speeds, with ample power for overtaking and a comfortable ride. However, at lower speeds, turbo lag is noticeable, making acceleration feel less responsive than expected.

    Final thoughts

The GAC Emkoo Executive-Plus 1.5L TGDI is a striking new addition to the crossover segment, offering a bold design and plenty of features at a competitive price. However, it’s not without its flaws. The visible welds, occasional infotainment frustrations, and real-world fuel economy concerns show that there’s still room for improvement before it can truly compete with more established rivals.

At a starting price of R599,900, the Emkoo presents an intriguing alternative for buyers looking for something different. With some refinements, it has the potential to be a solid contender in the market.
