We recently jetted off to Cape Town for the launch of the facelifted Audi Q8 and Q7, where the German automaker unveiled refreshed designs, HD Matrix LED headlights with laser light, and digital OLED taillights. But let’s be honest—while those updates are nice, we had our sights set on something a bit more… unhinged. Enter the Audi RS Q8 Performance, the flagship SUV in Audi’s RS line-up and a machine that blends aggressive styling with physics-defying power.
Bold, aggressive styling
The RS Q8 Performance doesn’t just turn heads—it practically snaps necks. Its massive Singleframe grille, oversized air intakes, and flared wheel arches make sure of that. The redesigned front bumper sharpens its menacing look, while the coupe-like roofline adds a touch of elegance to its brute-force presence.
At the rear, an aggressive diffuser and signature RS oval exhaust tips let everyone know that this isn’t just another luxury SUV—this one means business. And those massive 23-inch alloy wheels? They’re the automotive equivalent of a heavyweight boxer wearing designer shoes: stylish, but still ready to throw down.
A sporty and luxurious interior
Step inside, and the RS Q8 Performance greets you with a cabin that screams both speed and sophistication. RS sports seats wrapped in Valcona leather keep you snug during high-speed cornering, while carbon fibre and Alcantara trim elements remind you that this isn’t just any Q8.

Although the MMI infotainment system and Audi Virtual Cockpit have been around for a while, they still deliver sharp graphics and seamless functionality. The dual-touchscreen setup remains intuitive, and the RS-specific displays feed you real-time performance data—because let’s face it, if you’re driving an RS Q8, you want to see just how fast you’re going.
Power and performance
Beneath the sculpted hood sits a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 that belts out a staggering 471 kW and 850 Nm of torque. That’s enough grunt to launch this 2.3-tonne SUV from 0-100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds—quicker than some supercars. Power is distributed to all four wheels via Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system, ensuring that the RS Q8 Performance grips the road like a determined toddler holding onto their favourite toy.
The adaptive air suspension continuously adjusts to road conditions, balancing comfort with sharp handling. And despite its hefty size, rear-wheel steering makes it surprisingly nimble, meaning it’s just as capable carving through mountain passes as it is cruising on the highway.
First driving impressions
Press the start button, and the RS Q8 Performance roars to life with a deep, throaty growl. It doesn’t just sound fast—it feels like it’s daring you to put your foot down. And when you do? The acceleration is relentless, pinning you to the seat as the SUV surges forward. The 8-speed Tiptronic transmission fires through gears effortlessly, making sure power is always at your disposal.

Through Franschhoek Pass, the RS Q8 remained composed, thanks to its active anti-roll stabilization. Comfort mode keeps the ride plush and refined, while Dynamic mode dials everything up, stiffening the suspension and sharpening throttle response for a more engaging experience.
Final thoughts
With its bold styling, luxurious cabin, and mind-bending acceleration, it sits comfortably among the elite of high-performance SUVs. Whether you’re cruising through the city, blasting down the highway, or taking on winding roads, it delivers an exceptional drive.
At R3,266,100, the RS Q8 Performance isn’t exactly cheap, but compared to its platform-sharing siblings—the Lamborghini Urus and Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT—it starts to look like a bit of a bargain. You’re getting supercar-rivalling performance, cutting-edge tech, and everyday usability for a fraction of the price.
