The Golf GTI is one of the most successful compact sports cars in the world, with more than 2.5 million units produced globally to date. Just in time for its 50th birthday next year, Volkswagen is celebrating with a special edition focused on driving pleasure — the Golf GTI Edition 50. This commemorative model boasts increased power and torque, enhanced driving dynamics, and bespoke exterior and interior styling to distinguish it from the rest of the GTI family.

GTI Edition 50: Exterior Updates
On the outside, the Edition 50 wears a GTI 50 logo on the roof spoiler and interior-facing sides of the exterior mirrors. Exclusive elements include special door sill trim, a gloss black roof, black mirror caps, and black tailpipe tips. A dynamic side stripe featuring a colour gradient from black to Tornado Red further amplifies its sporty appearance.
Five paint finishes are offered for the Edition 50: Pure White, Moonstone Grey, Grenadilla Black Metallic, and two exclusive hues — Dark Moss Green Metallic and Tornado Red. The latter is especially significant, having graced iconic performance Volkswagens like the Golf II GTI 16V, Golf III VR6, and Golf VII GTI TCR since 1986.

GTI Edition 50: Interior Enhancements
Inside, the Edition 50 continues its unique theme with red seatbelts, sporty seats featuring a classic check pattern with Racing Green accents, and synthetic velour inserts. A newly designed multi-function leather sports steering wheel with a GTI 50 logo adds a final commemorative touch.

More Power and Sharper Dynamics
Under the bonnet, the Edition 50 is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine — a refined version of the Golf GTI Clubsport’s powerplant. Through internal engine modifications, Volkswagen has upped the output to 239 kW (from the base GTI’s 195 kW) and torque to 420 Nm (up from 370 Nm). This marks a significant boost over both the standard GTI and even the Clubsport, which produces 221 kW and 400 Nm.
Chassis revisions complement the power increase. The Edition 50 rides on a MacPherson front axle and four-link rear setup, and sits 15 mm lower than the standard GTI, improving both agility and stance.

Optional GTI Performance Package
For enthusiasts craving even sharper handling, Volkswagen offers the optional GTI Performance package exclusively for the Edition 50. This adds a performance chassis with stiffer spring rates — increasing the natural frequency at both axles by around 20%. The result is better body control, quicker response to inputs, and reduced pitch and roll. It also lowers the ride height by an additional 5 mm, bringing the total drop to 20 mm over the standard model.
Additional upgrades include Bridgestone Potenza Race semi-slick tyres (235 section) mounted on ultra-light 19-inch Warmenau forged wheels (just 8 kg per rim), and a titanium Akrapovič R-Performance exhaust system. The tyres offer improved grip with reduced rolling resistance and weigh 1.1 kg less per tyre than standard ones. Combined with the wheels and exhaust system, the total weight saving is over 20 kg.
Availability
Production of the Golf GTI Edition 50 will begin in Wolfsburg at the end of 2025, with deliveries set to commence in early 2026 — just in time for the GTI’s milestone anniversary. Volkswagen South Africa has yet to confirm if any units will be allocated to our market.
