We recently got behind the wheel of the new Nissan Navara Warrior by Premcar, proudly built at Nissan’s Rosslyn plant. This South African iteration of the Warrior brings a tougher, more aggressive stance to the Navara lineup, with a clear emphasis on off-road capability.
From the outside, the Warrior immediately sets itself apart. A modified front bumper, chunky fender flares, unique alloy wheels, and rubberized accents give it a bold, muscular presence. The addition of a roll bar finishes off the purposeful look—this isn’t just a badge upgrade.
Inside, the changes are more restrained but still meaningful. The cabin remains largely familiar, with a layout that’s functional and easy to navigate. While the dashboard design is starting to show its age, the Warrior-branded headrests and supportive seats add a touch of exclusivity and comfort.
Tech-wise, the Pro-4X infotainment system offers seamless connectivity through Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, while Nissan’s Intelligent Mobility features—including a 360° around-view monitor with an off-road mode—enhance safety and situational awareness whether you’re on the highway or deep in the bush.
Under the bonnet, the Warrior retains the 2.5-litre turbo-diesel engine from the PRO-4X, producing 140 kW and 450 Nm—sufficient grunt for both daily driving and serious trail work. What really elevates the Warrior, however, is what’s underneath: off-road suspension, all-terrain tyres (LT275/70 R17), a redesigned towbar, and improved ground clearance, all of which translate to better approach and departure angles.
While it doesn’t mirror its Australian counterpart exactly, this local version manages to look even more rugged than the PRO-4X it’s based on.
We took the Warrior through its paces on the challenging Piesangkloof 4×4 Trail, and it didn’t disappoint. The upgraded suspension and increased ride height make a noticeable difference, allowing it to tackle tough terrain with confidence and composure.
At R924,000, the Navara Warrior enters a highly competitive space. The rugged upgrades and local development pedigree certainly help justify the price tag, but a more extensive test drive will help determine if it’s the right bakkie for you.
