Toyota Gazoo Racing announces tasty updates for rally-bred GR Corolla

Toyota’s rally-inspired hot hatch, the GR Corolla, returns for 2026 with sharper dynamics, fresh design details, improved interior comfort, and enhanced technology. Developed by TToyota Gazoo Racing, the performance arm behind Toyota’s WRC success, the latest GR Corolla builds on its motorsport DNA to deliver an even more thrilling and confidence-inspiring drive both on and off the track.

    Performance

Under the hood, the 2026 GR Corolla retains its formidable 1.6-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder engine, delivering an impressive 224 kW at 6,500 rpm and 400 Nm of torque between 3,250 – 4,600 rpm.

Buyers now have the choice between two transmissions, a six-speed Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) with automatic rev-matching for seamless downshifts and a new eight-speed Gazoo Racing Direct Automatic Transmission (DAT).

To keep performance consistent under pressure, DAT models feature an automatic transmission fluid cooler, while Premium Plus models add a sub-radiator for additional cooling – perfect for spirited driving or track days.

At its core lies Toyota’s rally-honed GR-Four all-wheel-drive system, co-developed with the Toyota Gazoo Racing World Rally Team. Drivers can toggle between three AWD modes – Normal (60:40), Gravel (50:50), and Track (variable 60:40 to 30:70) – for tailored traction across every surface.

Handling is further sharpened by Torsen limited-slip differentials on both axles, providing precise torque distribution and improved grip through corners.

    Functional and fierce exterior

The 2026 GR Corolla has been fine-tuned for both performance and style. Engineers added 45.6 feet (14 meters) of additional structural adhesive to the front and rear sections, enhancing body rigidity and rear grip for better suspension control and stability.

Visually, the GR Corolla stands out with a bulging hood, functional gloss-black vents, and a color-keyed rear spoiler. The aggressive design is complemented by 15-spoke cast alloy wheels finished in gloss black on the base model and matte black on the Premium Plus.

Premium Plus variants also boast a forged carbon-fiber roof, a gloss black rear spoiler, and subtle red detailing that hints at the car’s performance pedigree. Every line and vent serves a purpose — channeling air efficiently to keep the turbocharged heart cool and aerodynamic balance in check.

    Tech meets track-focused interior

Inside, the GR Corolla blends motorsport-inspired design with cutting-edge technology and premium materials. The cabin features Brin Naub suede-trimmed sport seats, offering excellent lateral support during spirited drives. Base models get grey stitching, while Premium Plus variants step it up with bold red stitching for a sportier look.

The driver’s environment is centered around a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with customizable performance data and a much-appreciated new 8-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia touchscreen with voice control.

The infotainment suite supports wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and dual Bluetooth connectivity. Drivers also benefit from cloud-based navigation, real-time updates, and “Hey Toyota” voice commands via Drive Connect.

For audiophiles, the JBL Premium Sound System now includes nine speakers and a subwoofer, delivering immersive audio clarity. Plus, Active Sound Control (ASC) enhances the experience by projecting sporty sounds synced with driving inputs for a more visceral connection behind the wheel.

GR Corolla and GR Corolla Premium Plus model derivatives in other markets

For 2026, the GR Corolla lineup offers two well-equipped trims:

GR Corolla: The entry point to Toyota’s hot hatch universe, equipped with gloss-black wheels, Brin Naub sport seats, and a suite of connected tech.

GR Corolla Premium Plus: Adds a forged carbon roof, matte black wheels, red interior stitching, Head-up Display, sub-radiator, and the enhanced JBL system.

    Safety features

As thrilling as it is to drive, the GR Corolla doesn’t skimp on safety. All models come standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, offering advanced driver-assist technologies, including Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist and Automatic High Beams.

Automatic models gain Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and Proactive Driving Assist, which uses gentle braking and steering to maintain safe distances and smooth cornering.
