The new Hyundai Tucson was released back in 2021 before the Chinese dominance had begun. Yes, it had some competition but was one of the leaders in the segment. Fast forward four years and the world is in a different shape. The conversation is probably overdone, but the reality is the Chinese brands are here. So, the question is, do we still have space for everything else? The answer is a simple yes, but affordability is always a factor. We spent time with the midlife facelift Tucson R2.0D N Line AWD AT.
What has changed?
Thankfully, the designers of the Tucson did not meddle with it in this facelift to keep up with the trends. The modern looks of the Tucson make it a compelling option in the segment. Exterior enhancements include a redesigned front with a parametric grille and a rugged bumper, giving the SUV a bold appearance. At the rear, the bumper and skid plate have been reshaped.

Inside, the facelifted Tucson features a new cabin layout. Standard features include a 12.3-inch panoramic curved display that stretches across the dashboard and is quick and responsive. A Bose premium sound system, heated leather/suede seats, multiple USB ports, and a panoramic sunroof add to the already alluring interior. Space remains generous, with ample legroom and headroom for both front and rear passengers, making it easy to accommodate five adults comfortably. Boot space sits at a good 582 litres, which ensures nobody’s luggage is left behind.

Performance and drive
The facelifted Tucson is powered by a 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine that delivers 137 kW and 416 Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. The engine provides smooth and efficient acceleration. It is also frugal, and our time with the Tucson returned a fuel consumption of 7.2 L/100 km compared to the claimed 7.4 L/100 km.
Final word
The South Korean manufacturer has kept the Tucson competitive and relevant thanks to its looks, tech and pricing (R859,900). This should make it a worthy consideration when shopping for an SUV.
