Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has confirmed that the all-new Caravelle plug-in hybrid 4MOTION will be launched in South Africa around the middle of 2026. The new model builds on the long-standing Volkswagen Bus legacy while introducing electrified technology focused on efficiency, comfort, and versatility.
The Caravelle is offered with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain that combines electric driving with a petrol engine. A new 19.7 kWh battery enables an electric driving range of up to 95 km, depending on conditions, while supporting both AC and DC charging. DC fast charging allows the battery to be charged from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 26 minutes.

A key feature of the new Caravelle is electric all-wheel drive, achieved through electric motors on both the front and rear axles. This setup improves traction and stability across different driving surfaces, while allowing the vehicle to operate efficiently in everyday driving. Four driving profiles are available, namely Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Individual, enabling the drivetrain and steering to adapt to different use cases.
The Caravelle also introduces electric stationary air conditioning as standard. This system allows the cabin to be cooled or heated while the vehicle is parked, charging, or used for camping, without producing emissions. The feature can be activated via the infotainment system or a smartphone app and improves comfort while preserving driving range.

Power comes from a 1.5-litre TSI turbocharged petrol engine paired with electric motors and a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. The hybrid system prioritises electric driving at lower speeds, with the petrol engine assisting when additional power is required or when battery charge is low. Energy recuperation helps recharge the battery during driving.
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles says the new Caravelle reflects its move towards electrified mobility while retaining the flexibility and practicality the nameplate is known for. Full local specifications and pricing for the South African market will be confirmed closer to launch.
