We recently spent time with the Omoda C5 1.5T 230T Elegance X, and after handing back the keys, it remains clear why this model continues to draw attention in the compact SUV space.

    Design

The C5 has always been a looker. The sharp lines, coupe-inspired profile and futuristic detailing give it a distinctive presence on the road. It does not blend into traffic easily, which, in this segment, is often half the battle.

    Interior and features

Step inside and the modern theme continues. The cabin follows a clean layout, anchored by dual 10.25-inch screens serving as the digital instrument cluster and infotainment display. The system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, keeping connectivity simple and clutter-free.

The Elegance X derivative is well equipped. Dual-zone automatic climate control comes standard, along with a generous list of tech features that make the C5 feel more premium than its badge might suggest. Overall build quality feels solid, and it is a comfortable place to spend time.

    Performance and efficiency

Power comes from a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 115kW and 230Nm, driving the front wheels. In this updated model, the previous CVT has been replaced with a DCT transmission, which noticeably improves responsiveness and overall driving feel.

On the road, the C5 feels composed and smooth in daily driving. The new transmission sharpens performance slightly and makes the experience feel less strained compared to the outgoing setup.

Omoda claims fuel consumption of 6.9L/100km. During our time with the vehicle, we managed 7.2L/100km, which is close to the official figure and still an improvement over the previous model’s claimed 7.4L/100km.

    Verdict

Pricing for the Omoda C5 range starts at R339,900, while the 1.5T 230T Elegance X derivative is priced from R465,900.

The Omoda C5 1.5T 230T Elegance X combines bold styling, generous tech and improved drivetrain refinement into a competitive package. It may not reinvent the segment, but it strengthens its position with better efficiency and a more engaging drive.

For buyers looking for a well-specced compact SUV with distinctive design, the C5 continues to make a solid case for itself.
